Over the past few months I have had quite a few calls from people suffering from kidney stones. I thought I would write a short blog to help answer some basic questions on what kidney stones are, who is prone to get them, and what you can do to stop them from forming in your body.
Who is Prone to Kidney Stones?
Over 12% of the male population and 7% of females suffer from kidney stones once in their lifetime. They are most common in white males between the ages of thirty and fifty. Kidney stones are rare in children and African-Americans.
Statistics say 80% of those who have kidney stones will have a reccurrence at some point in their life especially if they do not change their diet. Kidney stones are more prevalent in South-Eastern United States (known to doctors as the “Stone Belt”) than other parts of the country.
So What Causes Kidney Stones?
Allopathic doctors will argue that common causes include too much calcium, too many vitamin supplements, too much animal products, and genetics.
Genetics can lead to a predisposition to kidney stones. However, what we have been taught about diet within the family is the reason the stones run in families year after year. The Standard American Diet (acidic diets) includes animal fats and protein, cheap supplements, drugs, soda, table salt, tap water, and can all lead to the formation of kidney stones.
How Can You Prevent Kidney Stones?
If you are prone to kidney stones there are many herbal supplements that can help lower the bodies ability to lead to kidney stones developing.
Aloe vera juice, ginkgo biloba, lobelia, marshmallow, Uva Ursi, cleavers, horsetail, and juniper berries are among some of the herbs that are known to have helped with kidney stones.
Magnesium citrate, a complex B vitamin with extra vitamin B6, and a lot of lemon water along with a healthy diet will not allow kidney stones of significant size to form.
DIET IS CRUCIAL!
The foundation of a healthy diet consisting of lots of fiber and potassium foods, like raw fresh organic produce, have a lower risk of forming kidney stones. Avoid refined foods. If you drink coffee, switch to green tea, if you drink soda stop! Drink lots of distilled water or spring water from a good source with lemons which will reduce the chances of developing kidney stones. Chronic de-hydration is a major factor in kidney stone disease in 15-20 percent of people.
